Kise Ryota certainly wasn't weak. He may have a pretty face, but he wouldn't be Kaijou's ace if he wasn't strong enough to carry a nationally ranked team on his shoulders. However, all this did for his current situation was make it all the more frustrating.

"Hey, looks like the so-called basketball ace isn't so cool without his fan club!" A goony looking third year scoffed as he put a hand on the wall next to where he and two of his friends had cornered Kise. He had been walking between the school building and the gym when he'd had the misfortune of running into them.

"I don't want any trouble," Kise said calmly.

"What, pretty little model boy doesn't want to mess up his face?" one of the other boys jeered.

"No, not really," Kise responded as he tried to slip out between them unsuccessfully, fighting the urge to snap back more at their frankly weak taunts. But he knew if he got into a fight now not only would he be yelled at by his manager, but by Kasamatsu as well.

"Where do you think you're going?" the third boy said as he blocked the way.

"I have basketball practice this afternoon. I'll get yelled at if I'm late so can you please move?" Kise could already feel Kasamatsu's fist on the back of his head.

"You're not going to blow off your senpai so rudely, are you? We just wanted to talk," the first boy said, the tone of his voice suggesting quite the opposite.

"Whether you're my senpai or not, I don't think that sort of reason for being late will fly with Kasamatsu-senpai," Kise said as he forced a laugh.

"Kasamatsu? Isn't he that loser that can't even talk to girls?" One of the boys said, laughing.

Kise frowned. He'd been trying to force a polite smile up until now, but the slight against his senior threw him a bit. "Senpai isn't a loser."

"Oh really? Well if you're going to talk back to your senpai, I might have to teach you some respect," the first boy said as he cracked his knuckles, pleased that he'd found a flimsy excuse to harass Kise.

Kise put up his hands in a defensive gesture. "Could we maybe skip that? I'd be happy to entertain you later but I really need to get to—"

The boy grabbed Kise by his shirt and slammed him against the wall. "You're not going anywhere, pretty boy!" The other two chimed in with some generic jeers.

Kise yelped a little as he hit the wall, although it didn't hurt nearly as bad as most of his captain's punishments. Then, in a decision he almost immediately regretted, he smiled and said, "if you're trying to confess to me I can't say you're doing a very good job, senpai."

This enraged his attacker, and he raised his other fist to direct at Kise's face. "You little shit, I'll break that obnoxious face of yours!"

Kise braced himself, but then a familiar voice interjected, "Get your hands off of him, you bastard!!" The boy holding Kise turned towards the source of the voice in surprise only to get hit smack in the face by Kasamatsu's foot, sending him sprawling on the ground.

"K-Kasamatsu-senpai!?" Kise said, startled by the sudden appearance of his teammate.

The moment he landed on his feet from his flying kick, Kasamatsu turned to look at Kise with a frown. "Kise, you're not hurt, are you?" He actually sounded concerned.

"No I'm fine I just—"

He was interrupted when one of the other boys indignantly turned on him and growled, "you looking for a fight, Kasamatsu!?"

"Yeah, do you really want to take all three of us on at once?" the third one chimed in, even though the one Kasamatsu had kicked was still struggling to get to his feet as blood flowed from his nose.

"Hell no, but the only one who can hit Kise is me!" Kasamatsu said, fearlessly staring down his classmates.

"S-senpai that's not a very heroic thing to s—"

"Shut up Kise!" Kasamatsu barked at him before he could finish.

"Well it's too bad you found one anyway, then!" the second boy sneered as he ran at Kasamatsu, raising his fist.

But before he could get there, he tripped and fell flat on his face.

"Three on one isn't really fair, don't you think?" Moriyama said as he withdrew the leg he'd stuck in the boy's path.

"Moriyama-senpai!?" Kise hadn't even seen him arrive.

"Yo!" Moriyama said with a smile and a wave. "Kasamatsu got really steamed that you were late, Kise, so we went looking for you!"

Kise's initial assailant was not amused by this. "You-you friggin' basketball idiots!" With a roar, he finally got to his feet, only to get body slammed by Hayakawa.

"'EBOUND!" he yelled, triumphantly, before turning to Kasamatsu. "Did you see that, Captain!?"

"Idiot, of course I saw it, it was right in front of my face!" Kasamatsu was as always, annoyed by Hayakawa's boundless enthusiasm. He turned on the third boy, who seemed to have considerably less bravado having seen both of his friends taken down. "Well!? What are you waiting for? Get the hell out of here!"

With a frightened yelp, the boy turned tail and ran, the two others following suit when they got back on their feet. "This isn't over, I'll get you bastards back for this!" the first boy yelled as he ran.

Kasamatsu threw a basketball at his head.

Once they'd left, Kise turned his attention back to his teammates. "You guys saved my skin, thanks!" he beamed. Kasamatsu punched him in the stomach. "O-ow, senpai why!?" he whined. Though it hadn't been one of his harder punches, it still hurt.

"Don't make stupid faces like that at a time like this! What the hell did you do to get into such a situation?" Kasamatsu said as he folded his arms across his chest.

"I don't think it was something he did on purpose, Kasamatsu." Moriyama said, almost laughing.

"Yeah, I don't even know those guys..." Kise shrugged. It wasn't the first time guys had tried to start something with him for no reason. He'd come to the understanding that their actions were mainly motivated by jealousy. "But, how did you guys know where I was?"

"We didn't," Moriyama replied.

"I hea'd the captain yelling and 'an towa'ds it as fast as I could!!" Hayakawa added emphatically. Moriyama nodded to say that was the reason he'd arrived as well.

"I guess we should thank Kasamatsu-senpai's furious temper, then!" Kise grinned and yelped when Kasamatsu hit him again.

"Come on, pick up your bag and let’s go! We're already fifteen minutes late because of you! Moriyama, Hayakawa, go find Kobori and tell him we found Kise!" Kasamatsu barked out instructions in his usual authoritative tone.

"Got it, captain!" Moriyama flashed a mock salute, dodgied the punch Kasamatsu threw at him for it, and jogged off towards the school building.

Hayakawa followed behind him, yelling 'KOBO'I-SENPAI!!" repeatedly as they went.

Kasamatsu rolled his eyes and turned to head back to the gym.

"Senpai, wait!" Kise ran after Kasamatsu.

"What is it, Kise?" Kasamatsu turned to look at the blonde.

"I, really appreciate what you did, you know," he sniffed a little, rubbing his nose. "It's good to know that whatever happens, you and everyone else are looking out for me."

Kasamatsu lets out a short huff. "Of course. We wouldn't be worthy of being called your senpai if we didn't." He looked over to Kise, who flashed him a genuine smile. This caused the older boy’s face to redden, and he shoved the offending face away from him. "I-idiot!"

Kise held in a laugh as he pulled Kasamatsu's hand off his face. "You're really cute when you're embarrassed, senpai."

Kasamatsu let out a strangled noise of indignation, raised his other hand to throw at Kise's head, but seemed to think better of it and just roughly ruffled his hair instead.

"Ah, senpai, don't do that!" Kise yelped.

"Then don't say stupid things! C'mon, let’s get going!" Kasamatsu grabbed Kise's hand, pulling him along to the gym. Kise stumbled a bit, but couldn't help but smile. He really was lucky to have such a dependable, cute senpai, wasn't he?
